International Conference of Labour and Social History

CFP: ITH 2004

The 40th International Conference of Labour and Social History (ITH) takes place at Linz/Austria, September 16-19, 2004. Themes are:

  • The formation of "classic" welfare states in Scandinavia and Central Europe and its historical context
  • The politics of labour organizations in countries without state-subsidized social security systems
  • The social policy of communist governments and the role of unions and similar associations in those countries
  • The remodelling of social security systems in previous communist ruled countries and the role of the welfare state model in this process

Papers should focus on one of the following sub-topics:

  • Provisions for industrial accidents and illness
  • Old age provision: Development of the transfer system and of alternative systems; labour policy and savings pension schemes
  • Birth and childhood: The role of birth control, maternity regulations, child allowances and organizing and financing of child care in labour social policy
  • Protection against unemployment
