The exhibition itself runs until 25 September, and is open Wednesdays to Fridays 1-5pm.

And the Library blog remembers the anniversary of a controversial speech by Nye Bevan on the eve of the launch of the NHS...

1835 election expenses archive

On display at the Library until Wednesday 29 July is a special and very timely new acquisition. Thanks to money from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Collecting Cultures programme the Library is now the owner of a rare and most unusual archive of election material - from 1835. The material details the expenses of a Lincolnshire Tory candidate, Thomas George Corbett, including amounts spent on alcohol, tobacco and wagons to get his voters to the hustings. More information here.

Moss Side Story exhibition and events

This week sees an exhibition and events about Moss Side history, including a talk by Bill Williams on the history of black Manchester (tomorrow, Tuesday 7 July at 12.30pm), and a talk on the local history of Moss Side by Michael Wood on Thursday 9 July at 4pm. Also on Thursday, at 7.30 pm, is 'The beginnings of Moss Side Carnival' - a talk by Locita Brandy, one of the first organisers of the Carnival back in the 1960s. The talks, and the exhibition, are at St James's Church, Princess Road, Manchester M14 4TH. Further details here.

Love on the Dole in Salford

In July 2016 the Salford Community Theatre Company will be producing an adaptation of Walter Greenwood's Love on the Dole. They say: 'It's a Salford story and we want a Salford cast to tell it. No experience necessary!'.
The company is holding taster workshops in the Library annexe 11am-2pm on Saturdays 11 and 18 July for anyone interested in learning more about the production or just about theatre in general. More information from Cat.Stobbs@salfordcommunitytheatre.org

Show Me the Money

The new exhibition at the People's History Museum, Show me the money: the image of finance, 1700 to the present, opens on Saturday 11 July and runs until 24 January 2016. The exhibition asks: what does ‘the market’ look like? What does money really stand for? How can the abstractions of high finance be made visible? Who is finance for? Admission free. More details, including lists of accompanying activities and events, here.
