Guided Tours: Marx behind the Scenes

Announcement, IISH, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The publications by Marx and Engels are among the most influential in the history of the world. Not so well known is that their archives have been preserved at the IISH since 1938. Work on digitizing the Marx-Engels archive is currently in full swing.

In honour of this digitization project, the IISH is organizing two special guided tours themed ‘Marx behind the scenes’. This is a rare opportunity to see documents from the Marx-Engels archive and learn more about the turbulent history of this collection. Documents produced by advocates and opponents of Marx and Marxism will also be included to complete the picture.

The guided tour will be conducted by Marien van der Heijden, head of Collection Development at the IISH.

The IISG’s Marx-Engels archive also contains the only surviving handwritten page of The Communist Manifesto, as well as a first edition copy of Das Kapital with Marx’s handwritten annotations. Both were added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2013.

The guided tour will be offered in Dutch on 28 August and in English on 4 September.

To register, please send an email to guidedtour@iisg.nl, stating ‘Marx guided tour’ and the date on which you would like to take part.
