“Documentary Heritage of the Russian Revolution”
Moscow, 25-27 April 2017

The archives, museums and libraries are the principal curators of the historical memory and documentary heritage of the Russian Revolution. In contemporary situation of rethinking the conceptions and scientific approaches to the study of the revolutionary events, the historical sources assume extraordinary prominence and information on their contents, characteristics, and locations becomes in particularly important as for researchers, as well for the society that continues to debate on the attitude to the past.

The information that will be presented at the conference is intended to open the resource capabilities of the libraries, museums, archives and other institutions of memory in the study of the Russian Revolution, to evaluate the extent of previous research of the problem and its informational supply.

The goal of the conference is to give the researchers from different countries the possibility to meet and discuss the actual problems of the study of Russian Revolution on international level.

The program of the conference will include the plenary and sectional meetings on the questions of common interest.

The plenary meeting of the conference will take place in the hall of the Executive Committee of the Third International (Comintern) in the building where it was situated in the end of 1930s – in the beginning of 1940s (Moscow, ul. Wilgelma Pika 4, str. 1).

The plenary meeting will be accompanied by an exhibition on the theme of the conference in the Center of Social and Political History – the branch of the State Public Historical Library of Russia (Moscow, ul. Wilgelma Pika 4, str. 1).

Sections:

1. The documents of history of Russian Revolution in Russia and abroad.
The overviews of the collections of documents, as well as archival materials, including in digital form that are the historical sources of the period of Russian Revolution will be presented at this section. It will permit to give an impulse to new research and scientific publications. The section will work in the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (Moscow, ul. Bol’shaya Dmitrovka, 15).

2. Museum collections devoted to the events of 1917 (state, public and private holdings).
The aim of this section is to reflect the contemporary position of museum collections, devoted to Russian Revolution, in particular, in its international aspect. Special place will take a problem of representation of history of Russian Revolution and specific “difficult questions” of history of the 20th century in museums and other exhibition environments. During the discussion we propose to explore the issues of the contemporary conceptual approaches and possibilities that the museums have today for the adaptation of the academic research results for public. The section meeting will take place in the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (Moscow, ul. Tverskaya, 21)

Two regards on the sources, their accessibility and value will be presented at the conference – by the curators and by the users. In the broadest sense the user is society by itself. The task of a researcher is to educate society in the spirit of respect and attention to the historical documents.

The topics of the round tables will be formed according the applications of the participants. The round tables will be hold in the State Public Historical Library of Russia (Moscow, Starosadskij per. 9), in the Center of Social and Political History – the branch of the State Public Historical Library of Russia (Moscow, ul. Wilgelma Pika 4, str. 2) and other locations.

All applications will be considered by the international Program committee. The Program committee reserves the right to reject an application that will go beyond the topic and conception of the conference.

The teachers, researchers, professors from the universities, research institutes, archives and museums who are specialised on Russian history are invited to participate in historical readings.

Regarding the results of the conference the collection of scientific articles is planned to publish.

The languages of the conference: Russian, English.

The deadline for applications is 25 January 2017.

First and family name (complete), place of work, the work position, scientific and academic degree, topic of the report (for a participant), contact telephone number and e-mail address should be mentioned in the application.

Travel, transport, accommodation and meal expenses are covered by the sending institution.

Online registration is opened for the participants of the conference (http://reg2017.shpl.ru).

The Scientific program will be complemented with the visits to the historical sites of the Russian Revolution in Moscow and Moscow region.
