From October 9th to October 14th 2017 an international Autumn School dealing with “Student Protest(s) in the Global South” will take place at the Department of Iberian and Latin American History (IHILA) at the University of Cologne.
The Autumn School is a one-week academic programme funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and organized by the IHILA and the thematic Network “Remapping the Global South” at the Global South Studies Center (GSSC) at the University of Cologne in cooperation with its partners Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Argentina) and the University of the Western Cape (South Africa). The language of communication will be English.
The Autumn School will be a great opportunity to expand knowledge on the socioeconomic, political, and cultural dimensions of student protests both from a contemporary and a historical perspective. Presentations by international researchers from the participating universities as well as student workshops will focus on four distinct but interrelated topics:
a) university reforms and the shaping of national student cultures,
b) student movements and democratization processes,
c) the role of students in anticolonial struggles, and
d) student mobilization against neoliberalism.
Visits to museums and memorial sites based both in Cologne and in the Federal City of Bonn, the former seat of the German government, will top off a diverse and stimulating program.
We are seeking highly motivated students (Master, Ph.D.) with interest in subjects related to social movements and/or student culture in the Global South to participate in the Autumn School.
