Call for Papers for Conference of the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung e.V. in co-operation with the International Institute for Social History, Amsterdam, 23 - 25 March 2012
The International Institute of Social History is the most suitable place for the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung to gather and organize its 2012 Conference about the current state of research on Emigration and Exil and its perspectives in the era of globalization. The Institute was established in November 1935 to save archives and libraries of opposition movements that were threatened with becoming irredeemably lost. In those days, National-socialism posed the main threat, but nowadays the IISH still fulfills its mission to safeguard archival materials worldwide. Recently, the Institute's Research Department has chosen "Global Labour History" and "Global Migration History" as its spearheads.
During this scholarly conference, the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung GfE aims to explore the intersections and points of contact, similarities and differences between Exil research and Global Labour / Migration History in a comparative and interdisciplinary manner that exceeds episodes and regions. Subjects for debate will be: What can Exil research learn from the concept of Global Labour / Migration history and the reverse: What can Exil research, with its focus on transcultural questions and problems, contribute to Global Labour / Migration History?
The main themes of the conference will be the specific and general effects of Migration and Exil on the economy, labour and industrial relations, social and political structures and cultural and scholarly landscape in the country of birth, border regions and country of immigration.
An apt viewpoint of the presentations may be creation of the image of Exil in historiography, literature, theatre and media. Papers may deal with:
- Expulsions or exodus because of warfare, split-up of a nation or other political, social, ethnic or religious revolutions
- Social and cultural position of migrants before, during and after migration (integration, acculturation or remigration) from a gender-specific, historical or actual point of view
- Transfer of knowledge in science, culture and art
- Networks: Familiy, friends, professional and other organizations, either self-help religious, cultural or international, e.g. trade unions or Interrnational Labour Organization ILO
- Methods and fundamentals of research, both traditional and modern (media)
The GfE explicitly invites young academics (Master's students and - graduates) to contribute a "work-in-progress" paper to the conference. Your abstract has to be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae.
Languages spoken during the conference: German and English. Interpreters are not available.

Quo vadis, Exilforschung? Stand und Perspektiven. Die Herausforderung der "Globalisierung"
Call for Papers, Tagung der Gesellschaft für Exilforschung e. V. in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Internationalen Institut für Sozialgeschichte Amsterdam, 23. - 25. März 2012
Die Gesellschaft für Exilforschung dürfte für ihre Tagung 2012 zum Forschungsstand von Emigration und Exil und zu künftigen Arbeitsperspektiven im Zeichen auch der Globalisierung keinen besseren Ort finden, als das Internationale Institut für Sozialgeschichte in Amsterdam. Seine Aufgabenstellung bei Gründung im November 1935, die Rettung von Archivalien und Bibliotheken der Arbeiter- und sozialen Bewegungen vor Vernichtung - seinerzeit durch die Nationalsozialisten -, erfüllt das IISG heute weltweit. Bei dessen Forschungsschwerpunkten stehen seit einigen Jahren "Global Labour History" und "Global Migration History" an erster Stelle.
Ziel der wissenschaftlichen interdisziplinären Konferenz der GfE in Kooperation mit dem IISG ist einmal, in vergleichender, u. a. auch Zeitabschnitte und Regionen überschreitender Perspektive Berührungs- oder Schnittpunkte, Übereinstimmungen und Unterschiede von Exilforschung und "Global (Labour / Migration) History" auszuloten, zum anderen der Frage nachzugehen: Was kann Exilforschung von der Konzeption der "Global (Labour / Migration) History" lernen und umgekehrt: Was kann Exilforschung mit ihrem Blick auch auf - in weitem Sinne - (trans)kulturelle Fragen und Probleme zur "Global (Labour / Migration) History" beitragen?
Die Fragestellungen sollen unter dem generellen Thema:
Migration und Exil, deren individuelle und allgemeine Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaft, Arbeit (Arbeitsverhältnisse), soziale und politische Strukturen sowie auf kulturelle und Wissenschaftsgebiete im Herkunftsland, in der Grenzregion und im Aufnahmeland, behandelt werden.
Dazu sind folgende Präsentationen, auch unter dem Aspekt der "Bildformung" in und durch Historiographie, Literatur, Bühnen- und Mediendarstellungen, denkbar:
- Vertreibung oder Exodus aufgrund von Krieg, Teilung eines Landes oder aufgrund anderer politischer, sozialer, ethnischer, religiöser Umwälzungen
- Sozialer und kultureller Status von "Migranten" vor, während und nach der "Migration" (Integration, Akkulturation oder Remigration), auch unter gender-spezifischem und unter historischem sowie aktuellem Aspekt
- Transfer von "Know how", Wissenschaft(en), künstlerischen Strömungen aller Art
- Netzwerke: Familie, Freunde, Berufs- und andere Organisationen - religiöse, kulturelle, internationale wie z. B. Gewerkschaften oder die Internationale Arbeitsorganisation (ILO) -, Selbsthilfe
- Methoden und traditionelle sowie moderne (Medien) Forschungsgrundlagen
Junge Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler (Master-Studierende und Doktoranden) sind besonders eingeladen, ihre dem Tagungsthema entsprechenden Arbeiten als "work-in-progress" zur Diskussion zu stellen. Dem Vorschlag sollte ein kurzer Lebenslauf beigefügt werden.
Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch (keine Dolmetscher).
