Call for Panelists: SHCY 2013 Annual Conference--Youth Movements and Utopian Spaces

The 2013 Society for the History of Childhood and Youth (SHCY) annual conference (Nottingham, UK, 25-27 June) is focused on questions of Space and Childhood. I would like to put together a panel that explores the role of utopian spaces in youth organizations.

My own contribution will focus on the role of imagined colonial frontiers in the development of the German Pfadfinder (Boy Scouts), with attention to the ways that utopian colonial spaces could be used by adults to reform young people's behavior and by young people to construct their own realms for autonomous experiences. I would be happy to consider putting this paper together with other papers focused on colonial-themed youth organizations like the Scouts, or with papers that consider a broader range of imagined spaces and their uses.

For more information on the SHCY and its conference, please visit http://shcyhome.org/conference/. The deadline for submitting panels is 31 October. Please contact me with suggestions, proposals, or questions at jeff.bowersox [at] usm.edu.
