European Network in Universal and Global History (ENIUGH)

After the successful congresses of the European Network in Universal and Global History in Leipzig (2005), Dresden (2008) and London (2011), the next ENIUGH-congress will take place in Paris at the École normale supérieure and supported by the labex TransferS. Under the theme "Encounters, Circulations and Conflicts", the problematic opposition of centres and peripheries, which is still influential in historical research, will be challenged. The multitude of places and centres from where history is written and the plurality of the languages in which historical artefacts are conveyed will be analysed. We hope to stimulate a discussion on the meaning and relevance of relations, comparisons, transfers, and entanglements between states, peoples, communities, and individuals in a 'long durée' perspective. We especially aim to involve colleagues from former colonies. In addition, the centenary of the beginning of the First World War provides the opportunity to address the destructi!
ve effects of international and global connectivity. We further seek to integrate the historical interactions between man and environment, including cultural and economic processes as well as the various aspects of material and social life. The history of empires belongs to core topics, as do large-scale crises and the consequences of political, technological, and ideological revolutions. All in all, our intension is to transcend the confines of national history writing.
While the majority of the contributions will deal with particular historical subjects, some will concentrate on questions of theory and methodology. Besides the panels in the thematic sessions, roundtables and ple-naries will offer room for joint discussions. We look forward to welcoming to Paris historians interested in transnational and global history, from European as well as from non-European countries, and representing various disciplines involved in the field, which range from political science to archaeology, from economic to art history.

Faisant suite aux congrès organisés par l'ENIUGH à Leipzig (2005), à Dresde (2008) puis à Londres (2011) le prochain congrès aura lieu à Paris et sera hébergé par l'Ecole normale supé-rieure et adossé au labex TransferS. Le thème général en sera "Rencontres, circulations et conflits". On s'attachera à relativiser le problème créé par l'opposition entre centres et péri-phéries en étudiant la mise en perspective des faits historiques à partir de divers lieux où s'écrit l'histoire, en observant la multiplicité des supports, notamment linguistiques sur lesquels s'appuie la réflexion historique. Nous attendons de ce congrès des débats sur les notions de connexion - , de comparaison, de transfert, d'imbrications entre les Etats, les peuples, les communautés, les individus, le tout dans la longue durée. La participation de chercheurs issus d'anciennes colonies est particulièrement souhaitée. L'anniversaire de la première Guerre mondiale fournira l'occasion d'une réflexion sur les conflits. Les perspectives s'échelonneront des interactions entre l'humanité et l'environnement en passant par l'histoire culturelle et économique, l'histoire de la vie matérielle ou sociale pour aller jusqu'aux empires, aux crises à large échelle aux conséquences des révolutions politiques, technologiques ou idéologiques. L'accent sera mis sur les modes de dépassement des histoires nationales. La plupart des ateliers seront consacrés à des objets précis, d'autres devront se concentrer sur les questions de méthodes. Le congrès comprendra des conférences en plenum et des sessions parallèles. Nous veillerons à accueillir à Paris des historiens intéressés par l'histoire transnationale qu'ils viennent d'Europe ou d'autres pays du monde et à quelque discipline qu'ils appartiennent, de la science politique à l'archéologie, de l'histoire économique à l'histoire de l'art.

Nach den erfolgreichen Kongressen des European Network in Universal and Global History in Leipzig (2005), Dresden (2008) und London (2011) wird der nächste ENIUGH-Kongress im Jahr 2014 in Paris stattfinden, an der École normale supérieure und angebunden an das labex TransferS. Unter dem Rahmenthema "Begegnungen, Zirkulationen und Konflikte" wird es darum gehen, die problematische Gegenüberstellung von Zentren und Peripherien zu hin-terfragen, die in der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit historischen Prozessen wei-terhin häufig dominiert. Zu diesem Zweck sollen die Vielfalt der Orte und Zentren, von denen aus Geschichte geschrieben wird, die Vielfalt der in den Überlieferungsträgern relevanten Sprachen untersucht werden. Wir erhoffen uns daher Diskussionen über die Bedeutung von Beziehungen, Vergleichen, Transfers und Verflechtungen zwischen Staaten, Völkern, Ge-meinschaften und Individuen in zeitlicher Tiefenschärfe. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist es, Forschungen aus den ehemaligen Kolonien in die Debatten einzubeziehen.
Zudem bietet der Jah-restag des Beginns des Ersten Weltkrieges die Gelegenheit, die Konflikthaftigkeit internatio-naler und globaler Zusammenhänge zu thematisieren. Potentielle Beiträge sollen auch die Interaktionen zwischen Mensch und Umwelt in historischer Perspektive in den Blick nehmen, einschließlich kultureller und wirtschaftlicher Prozesse und verschiedener Aspekte des mate-riellen und sozialen Lebens bis hin zur Geschichte der Imperien und Krisen großen Maßstabs sowie den Konsequenzen politischer, technologischer und ideologischer Revolutionen. Unser zentrales Anliegen ist es, die Grenzen der nationalen Historiographien zu überschreiten. Wäh-rend sich die Mehrzahl der Beiträge konkreten Gegenständen widmen wird, werden sich an-dere auf methodische Fragen konzentrieren. Neben den einzelnen, in thematischen Sektionen zusammengefassten Panels werden Podiums- und Plenumsdiskussion Gelegenheit zur ge-meinsamen Debatte bieten. Wir freuen uns darauf, in Paris Historiker zu begrüßen, die auf dem Gebiet der transnationalen und Globalgeschichte arbeiten, sowohl in Europa als auch in nicht-westlichen Ländern, und die verschiedenste disziplinäre Sichtweisen vertreten, die von der Politikwissenschaften bis zur Archäologie, von der Wirtschafts- bis zur Kunstgeschichte reichen können.
