CfP: From the Wars of Fascism to the Resistance

Call for proposals, deadline 31 August 2023

“CANTIERI DELLA RESISTENZA”
Milan, 30 November – 1 December 2023

1. The National Institute "Ferruccio Parri" promotes a biannual event of reflection and historiographical comparison on the topic of Resistance, called ‘Cantieri della Resistenza’ (‘Workshop of Resistance’). The 2023 edition of the ‘Cantieri’ will be dedicated to the theme "From the Wars of Fascism to the Resistance" and will be held in Milan, at Casa della Memoria, on 30 November and 1 December 2023.

2. Proposals for papers will be evaluated. The papers should concern new studies on the themes of anti-fascism and Resistance, both in Italy and Europe, during World War II (including forms of resistance related to deportations and internment) and events related to the period of postwar democratic Reconstruction and Transitional justice. In addition, the proposals may also present new studies that critically retrace the links connecting the Liberation War with the fascist wars, from the imperial ‘triumphs’ of the 1930s to the disastrous outcomes of participation in the World War II ("reconquest" of Libya, aggression against Ethiopia, war in Spain, invasion of Albania and disastrous participation in World War II). Today, reflecting on the aspirations, disillusions, scars and exaltations that the constant presence of war etched into the body of Italian society is an essential step in analyzing the scope and the actual grip of the instruments of consensus, of war rhetoric and its rituals, and also to shed light on the "long-lasting roots" of the crisis of the fascist regime as well as on the experience of the Italian Social Republic.

3. Researchers/researchers of any age and education may participate. Those competing for the 2023 edition of the Prize “Claudio Pavone” may also apply.

4. Proposals must be submitted in the form of an abstract of no more than 7000 characters, along with the application form and a curriculum vitae. The application should include: name, surname, date and place of birth, fiscal code, residence, telephone and email address.

5. Proposals must be sent by e-mail to the National Institute "Ferruccio Parri" by 12 p.m. on 31 August 2023 to: segreteria@insmli.it. The subject line should indicate: 'Cantieri 2023'.

6. Proposals will be selected by a five-member committee consisting of: Laura Bordoni (Scientific Committee National Institute "Ferruccio Parri"), Lucia Ceci (University of Rome Tor Vergata - Scientific Committee National Institute "Ferruccio Parri"), Filippo Focardi (University of Padua - Scientific Director National Institute "Ferruccio Parri"), Santo Peli (University of Padua - Scientific Committee National Institute "Ferruccio Parri"), Paolo Pezzino (University of Pisa - President National Institute "Ferruccio Parri").

The list of selected proposals will be published by 30 September 2023 on the website of the Ferruccio Parri National Institute.
