Le Centre de Recherches Europes-Eurasie a le plaisir de co-organiser avec le CeTOBAC (Ehess, CNRS, Collège de France) la Rencontre avec Maria Todorova autour de son livre : The Lost World of Socialists at Europe’s Margins. Imagining Utopia, 1870s-1920s (Boombury, 2020).
The precarious geopolitical balance in the contemporary Middle East cannot be understood without considering the circumstances of Ottoman collapse during and immediately after the First World War. The dramatic implosion of this age-old imperium that, during the long nineteenth century, had uneasily struggled to ward off foreign imperial intrusion and lessen its dependence on European capital, was accompanied by unprecedented levels of (genocidal) violence, both on and off the battlefields.
This Wednesday, 2 March at 2pm we welcome Chris Hall to speak on his new book The nurse who became a spy, about the remarkable Nurse Addy, who fought fascism in Spain and France 1937-1944. He will tell us about the life of Manchester's Madge Addy and how a truly international effort led to the uncovering of her hidden life story.
